When using a roof rack, items should be as secure as possible before traveling on the road. Ropes can be used to tie items to the racks as well as bungee cords and similar devices. If the objects on your car extend over the front or the back, then attach a flag to one end to let other drivers know to stay back.

An option for easily getting items on and off your car is to use a removable roof rack. Items can be loaded to the rack before it's secured on your roof. You won't need to worry about trying to get items down from the top of your car as you can remove the entire rack system.
